Honour invitations or face sanction, senate warns MDAs

The Senate Committee on Public Procurement has announced an immediate suspension of procurement activities for any ministry, department, or agency of the Federal Government that fails to honour its invitations or submit required accountability documents.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Olajide Ipinshagba, issued the warning during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, stating that the decision follows a troubling pattern of non-compliance by several government entities.

According to Ipinshagba, the move is being carried out in collaboration with the Bureau of Public Procurement to enforce transparency and compliance with procurement regulations.

“It has come to our attention that several agencies and institutions have repeatedly and unapologetically flouted our invitations to appear before the Committee. This lack of cooperation and blatant disregard for due process is unacceptable,” he said.

He emphasised that the committee’s oversight role is critical to ensuring transparent, competitive, and fair use of public funds, noting that agencies that fail to cooperate are undermining both legislative authority and public trust.

“Let me be clear: any agency or institution that continues to ignore our invitations will face serious consequences. Such defiance will not be tolerated,” he warned.

Effective immediately, Ipinshagba said all procurement processes will be suspended for non-compliant MDAs, and the committee will recommend disciplinary actions where necessary.

“We are committed to enforcing the Public Procurement Act and will not hesitate to impose penalties on individuals or agencies showing flagrant disregard for the law,” he added.

He urged all government bodies to treat the committee’s oversight seriously, calling it not just a legal obligation but a moral duty to uphold transparency and accountability in public service.

“In closing, we must work together to ensure that our procurement processes reflect the highest standards of accountability and ethics. We owe that to the constituents who depend on us to ensure their resources are managed effectively and responsibly,” Ipinshagba said.
