GOODWILL MESSAGE Delivered by the Vice President, Association of Environmental Lawyers of Nigeria (AELN)

At the Webinar in Celebration of World Environment Day
Theme: Effective Plastic Waste Management: A Challenge or Opportunity?

Distinguished colleagues, esteemed speakers, environmental champions, and participants,

I bring warm greetings from the Association of Environmental Lawyers of Nigeria (AELN), and I am honoured to share this goodwill message as we join voices across the world in commemorating World Environment Day.

This year’s theme—*“Effective Plastic Waste Management: A Challenge or Opportunity?”*, invites deep reflection on one of the most urgent environmental issues of our time. Plastic waste, with its staggering impact on ecosystems and human health, continues to demand global attention and local action.
In Nigeria and across the developing world, plastic pollution presents a dual reality: a growing challenge due to inadequate waste infrastructure, but also a profound opportunity—an opportunity to rethink our consumption patterns, innovate in sustainable alternatives, and strengthen legal and policy frameworks that support circular economies.

At the AELN, we believe the law is a powerful tool for environmental justice and sustainability. We must advocate for stronger legislation, enforce existing regulations more effectively, and empower communities with the knowledge of their rights and responsibilities toward the environment.

Today’s webinar is not just a conversation, it is a call to action. Let us be bold in reimagining solutions, intentional in forging partnerships, and relentless in our commitment to a cleaner, healthier future for all.

On this World Environment Day, may we each leave inspired to act, equipped to lead, and united in our shared mission to turn the tide on plastic waste.

Thank you, and I wish us all a meaningful and impactful session.

    Abiye Tam-George – MBA, CGAN.
    Vice President
Association of Environmental Lawyers of Nigeria (AELN)
    Vice-Chai, NBA, Lagos Branch.
