Workers Day: Union threatens industrial action against Turkish Airlines over alleged victimization

The National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, has threatened the management of Turkish Airlines with industrial action over alleged victimization for joining the union of their choice.

This has renewed the workers’ loggerhead with the Airline’s management as Comrade Ben Nnabue, President, NUATE, in his speech during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration, alleged that the General Manager of Turkish Airline in Nigeria, worked against workers joining the union and stopped them from having a union office against the provision of the Nigerian Labour Law.

Nabue lamented the fruitless effort of the former Ministers of Aviation and Aerospace Development and Labour and Productivity to resolve the lingering impasse, even as the Airline refused to adhere to rules and regulations on Labour in Nigeria.

Nnabue President recalled that the legal case by the Turkish Airline against the union was thrown out by the National Industrial Court for lack of substance, charging members to to gear up for industrial action against the airline after the May Day celebration.

He said: “The case of victimisation of the staff of Turkish Airlines by the General Manager of the Airline for membership of, and holding office in, our union contrary to the provisions of law has now reached a point beyond elastic limit.

“Mediation efforts by the Minister of Aviation and Minister of Labour and Productivity have been rendered ineffective by the intransigence of Turkish Airlines Management.

“As such, the Union has no choice than to do what we have to do, especially as the case of the Airline against the Union at the National Industrial Court has been thrown out.

“Accordingly, the Lagos and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) State Councils are to be battle ready for war with Turkish Airlines immediately after the May Day celebration.”

Besides, Nnabue lamented the continuous deductions of 50 per cent of total Internally Revenue Generation (IGR) of aviation agencies at source by the Federal Government.
