The Bauchi State Police Command has launched an investigation into a mob attack that left one man dead and another critically injured over allegations of dog theft in the Lushi area of Bauchi metropolis.

The victim, identified as Peter (surname yet to be confirmed), was lynched by a group of youths who accused him and another man of stealing a dog.

According to a statement by the Spokesman of the Command, CSP Ahmed Wakil, the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m.

Wakil said the second victim, 38-year-old Dokagk Danladi, sustained severe machete wounds to the head during the attack.

He was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH for treatment, while Peter was found dead at the scene and declared deceased by medical personnel.

He stated that a team of detectives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, visited the scene to collect evidence and better understand the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, strongly condemned the act, describing it as “barbaric and detrimental to our nation’s legal framework.”

He warned that the Command under his leadership would not tolerate acts of jungle justice or allow individuals to take the law into their own hands.

“No one has the right to brutalize a suspect. It is unlawful and unacceptable for anyone to assume the role of law enforcement. Anyone apprehended in connection with a crime must be handed over to the police or appropriate authorities for proper investigation and prosecution,” the CP said.

He urged residents to remain calm and allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
