The Chief Magistrate Court 2 sitting in Yola, Adamawa State has convicted two young men, said to be habitual thieves and part of notorious youths infamously called Shila Boys around the state.
The youths were on Friday handed three-year jail term each without option of fine.
The convicts are Auwal Garba, 20 years old and resident of Rumde Ward; and Hamza Ibrahim, 20 years old of NEPA Ward, both in Jimeta, Yola North Local Government Area.
The court, presided over by Magistrate A. M. Adamu, sentenced the two after they were tried and found guilty of criminal conspiracy, public nuisance, extortion and voluntary causing of hurt.
On their arraignment, the convicts had pleaded guilty after the content of the First Information Report earlier tendered by the police prosecutor, Sgt Ahmed Abubakar, was read to them.
Ahmed told the court that the convicts were arrested on 3rd March, 2025, by police operatives attached to Anti-Shila section of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police command.
He said this was after the convicts were caught extorting valuables from residents along Bishop Street, Jimeta.
He said the convicts had tried to evade arrest, injuring one Corpral Salisu Yunusa in the process.
According to him, preliminary investigation had shown to the police that the convicts were habitual thieves who had previousely been apprehended severally for various offences.
He added that the convicts normally used to hire a tricycle from one Gambo and used to extort passengers who boarded their tricycle.
Shila Boys are young people usually around teenage age or people in their early 20s who typically perpetuate day light robbery using commercial Keke NAPEP, dispossessing unsuspecting passengers of their light belongings, often handsets and cash, mostly around the metropolitan Yola North, Yola South and Girei LGAs.
