Amid growing tension in Osun over the resolve of the sacked local government chairmen on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to resume duties following the recent Court of Appeal judgment, the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress on Sunday directed workers in all the 30 local government councils to withdraw their service, effective from Monday.
The labour attributed the directive to the need to ensure the safety of local government employees, considering the controversy surrounding the planned enforcement of the judgment, which purportedly reinstated sacked chairmen and councilors who were elected in 2022.
While the state government insisted that the Court of Appeal judgment delivered last Monday did not reinstate the chairmen, whose election was declared null and void by the 2022 rulings of a Federal High Court, the APC argued that the appellate court reinstated the council bosses.
However, a statement signed by the NLC chairman in Osun, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, ordered the council workers to withdraw their service from Monday, 17th February 2025, until further notice
According to the statement, “The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has noticed the political uproar bringing agitations and fear among our members working within the Local Government Areas across the state. The NLC is apolitical, but we won’t allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity.
“We urge all the political parties and their members to abide by the rule of law. We insist on the rule of law to avoid a descent into anarchy. In furtherance of this, we hereby direct all our members working in all the LGAs in Osun State to withdraw their services effective Monday, 17th February 2025, by 12:00 a.m. (midnight).
“We won’t allow our members to return until their safety at work can be assured and guaranteed, which is their constitutional right. We hereby call on all security agencies to ensure the safety of all lives and property within Osun State local governments and the public in general,” the statement concluded.
