Recently, a Court in China jailed its former national soccer coach for 20 years for collecting bribes from players to play for the Chinese National team.
Here in Nigeria, we are not serious in our fight against corruption. Politicians that steal billions of naira are given pat on the back sentences. At times, plea bargains that are bereft of public interest considerations are entered. What about situations where ex-State Execs are granted State pardon after being convicted for looting their States’ treasuries and to go with the looted funds? Corruption cases are deliberately frustrated by some defence counsel and dragged for years, file interlocutory appeals up to the SC and this is inspite of the provisions of the ACJA that provide that criminal cases must be heard day by day.
We are all culpable because our actions, whether deliberately or otherwise ,(silence/praise-singing)encourage corruption.
