A two-day stakeholders’ meeting on family planning in Taraba State has concluded with a collective call for the timely release of funds to sustain reproductive health services and protect individuals’ rights to family planning.

Organized by The Challenge Initiative (TCI) in partnership with the Taraba State Primary Health Care Development Agency (TSPHCDA), the meeting was held at the conference hall of the Taraba AIDS Control Agency (TACA).

It brought together partners, media representatives, and officials from relevant ministries and other concerned organisations to discuss challenges and propose solutions to improve family planning services in the state.

Stressing the importance of an efficient and transparent funding process, participants urged the Taraba State government to prioritise family planning services.

The delay in fund disbursement, according to them, hinders progress and impacts key areas such as reducing unintended pregnancies, improving women’s health, and driving socioeconomic development.

In addition to timely funding, the stakeholders demanded transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilisation of family planning funds.

While proposing mechanisms to help track and report family planning fund usage to ensure resources are effectively managed, media practitioners were also called upon to play a proactive role in monitoring the release of allocated funds and advocating for their disbursement in line with the state budget.

They were observed to have also urged the government to adhere to budget timelines, noting that disruptions to family planning services could be avoided with consistent funding.

The participants highlighted the value of partnerships with relevant organizations to strengthen family planning programmes, especially during periods of government funding delays.

Expressing frustration, the stakeholders pointed out that despite the establishment of a dedicated annual budget line for family planning several years ago, no funds have been released to date.

They called for immediate action to address this gap and ensure the successful implementation of family planning initiatives in Taraba State.
