The Tourism Retreat and Roundtable, organized by the Travel, Tourism, and Hospitality Committee (TT&H) of the NBA-SBL, saw attendees tour the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) on 27th October 2024. Thereafter, participants had an audience with His Excellency, Olusegun Obasanjo, who addressed them and answered questions. The Chairperson of the TT&H Committee, Mrs. Chinenye Oragwu, spoke on behalf of the Committee. She detailed the activities participants had been involved in during the three-day retreat and stated that Abeokuta had truly lived up to its reputation as a hospitable place. She mentioned that engaging discussions were held at the Roundtable on 26th October 2024 and that the NBA-SBL was looking forward to partnering with stakeholders to implement some of the solutions proposed at the Roundtable towards revitalizing the travel, tourism, and hospitality sectors in Nigeria.
His Excellency, Olusegun Obasanjo, spoke about the purpose of the Presidential Library, which is to preserve records and inform about the past so that we can be well-guided in the present and future. He stated that the problem of Africa is that we don’t keep records and we don’t tell our stories.
He emphasized that, by virtue of Nigeria’s population, the country is meant to be the leader of the black race. He urged attendees to keep faith and not be frustrated, stating that Nigeria is a wonderful country, and with the right leadership and a small team of just a few people, Nigeria will be among the top nations of the world. He stressed the need to build a critical mass to effectively put Nigeria back on the map and advocated for positive disruption if progress is to be made.
His Excellency, Olusegun Obasanjo, stated that regardless of what may be said about his generation, they fought for the unity of Nigeria and laid the foundation for democracy. He added that there is a need to rethink how the country practices its democracy. He concluded by appreciating the attendees of the retreat for visiting OOPL. He pointed out that some countries rely strictly on tourism for their GDP and emphasized the importance of preserving Nigeria’s tourist sites, which would go a long way in boosting tourism in the country.
