The Kebbi State Government has announced the closure of the College of Health Technology, Jega, following a demonstration by students of the college.
Commissioner for Higher Education in the state, Isah Abubakar-Tunga, disclosed this in a release in Birnin Kebbi, on Thursday, noting that if the demonstration was allowed to continue, it might escalate to an uncontrollable stage.
Abubakar-Tunga advised all the students to vacate the college with immediate effect.
He said, “Their main target is the provost, they burnt his house and completely vandalised his car. When we visited the college, we only met the Registrar in the school but the Divisional Police Office of the area has taken the provost to the police station to rescue his life.
“If not because of the intervention of the DPO, the students would have lynched him. The students said the courses of the college have only state recognition not federal, meaning, after graduation, they will be entitled to ordinary diplomas, not national diploma certificates.”
Others according to him, are; lack of toilets, absence of potable water, poor sanitary environment, and bad leadership among others.
The commissioner said the college would remain closed for three weeks to one month, assuring that every student resuming must come with his parent and must write an undertaking.
