A Sokoto Chief Magistrate Court granted bail on Wednesday to Shafi’u Umar, a former Special Assistant to ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal.
Umar was charged for allegedly circulating falsehoods against Governor Ahmad Aliyu and his wife on social media platforms.
He was accused of disseminating a video showing the governor’s wife, Hajia Fatima Aliyu, “spraying” money at her birthday celebration amidst widespread economic difficulties.
However, he was charged with sharing a document falsely claiming that Governor Aliyu failed his Senior Secondary School Examination and lacked proficiency in English.
The case was initially presented on August 26, with Police Prosecutor Insp. Abdurahman Mansur asserting that the charges violate the penal code.
Umar, who had pleaded not guilty, was remanded in custody since the charges were filed, following an alleged incident on July 18.
In a ruling on the bail application filed by lead Defense Counsel Mr. Al’Mustafa Abubakar, Magistrate Fatima Hassan granted Umar N1 million bail, with a surety in like sum.
Magistrate Hassan stipulated that the surety must be a resident of Sokoto and must submit their National Identity Card along with two passport-sized photographs to the court.
The case was adjourned to October 10, 2024, to allow the Prosecution, as assured by Police Prosecutor Mansur, time to complete their investigation.
Hassan also ordered the defendant to be remanded in a correctional facility for failing to meet bail conditions.
Meanwhile, prior to the adjournment, the Defense Counsel requested that the Judge consider the three prior adjournments due to police investigations and direct the authorities to finalize their findings as mandated by law.
