Operatives from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have detained Shizzer Joy Nasara Bada, the former Commissioner of Finance and Accountant General in Kaduna State during Nasir el-Rufai’s administration, at Lagos Airport.
Bada was apprehended on Sunday at Murtala Muhammed Airport while attempting to leave the country. The ICPC had received intelligence suggesting she might flee to avoid investigation amid rising corruption allegations involving both her and ex-Governor el-Rufai.
Bada’s arrest is part of a broader crackdown on officials from el-Rufai’s administration, many of whom are now under scrutiny for alleged financial mismanagement. El-Rufai himself has been indicted by the Kaduna State House of Assembly for allegedly siphoning N423 billion from the state treasury. Although specific allegations against Bada remain undisclosed, they are suspected to involve significant financial irregularities, including mismanagement and embezzlement.
This development has drawn considerable attention, with observers speculating that it might signal the start of a larger investigation into el-Rufai’s administration. The ICPC is expected to release further details as the investigation progresses, which may uncover a network of corruption implicating several high-profile figures.
Additionally, el-Rufai has initiated legal action against the Kaduna State House of Assembly for accusing his administration of misappropriating N432 billion, resulting in substantial state debt. A fundamental rights suit was filed in June at the Federal High Court in Kaduna by el-Rufai’s attorney, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
