The Imo State Commander of the Vehicle Inspections Office, Mr. Chuks Okwaraejiaku, has uncovered a network of illegal VIO operators, who have been masquerading themselves as genuine officers and extorting money from motorists.
He said, “This tarnishes the image of the agency. We will not tolerate this level of indiscipline and corruption within our ranks.”
He revealed that he discovered that disgruntled elements had been operating unchecked, using fake IDs, Sienna vehicle and unauthorized uniform to carry out their illicit actions.
Reading the riot act during a press conference, Commander Okwaraejiaku said that those found engaging in illegal activities would be arrested, prosecuted and dismissed from service.
He noted that the agency is committed to restoring public trust and ensuring that its officers/marshals conduct themselves with integrity and professionalism.
He also added that by the time they were done with the suspension, the office would remove the bad eggs and engaged a good ones.
Highlighting the duties of the VIO marshal, Okwaraejiaku mentioned them as protection of lives of drivers/passengers on the road, checking the good condition of tyres, ensuring the proper use of seat belts, checking vehicle papers and other required features for the safety on the road.
Stating that the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, had created an enabling environment for motorists in the state, he appeal to Imo people to join hands with the government to move the state to an enviable height.
