Rebecca Cheptegui, 33, Ugandan marathon runner who finished 44th in last month’s Paris Olympics, is in critical condition after allegedly being doused with petrol by her boyfriend.
Cheptegui suffered burns to over 75% of her body following the attack on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred in Eldoret, Kenya, where Cheptegui owns a house for training purposes. Both Kenyan and Ugandan newspapers confirmed her condition.
Trans Nzoia county police commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom told The Star newspaper that Cheptegui’s boyfriend, Daniel Ndiema Marangach, was also burnt in what is described as a domestic dispute.
The police are currently investigating the case.
