The Kano police are investigating the tragic deaths of a mother and her five children under mysterious circumstances.
Mrs. Alhakatu Abdulkarim and her children—Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman, and Jamilu—reportedly died after consuming “expired food.”
Sources said that the widow, who was the sole provider for her family, prepared a meal using “expired cassava flour,” which led to their deaths.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident on Sunday, August 18, identifying the victims as residents of Karkari village in Gwarzo Local Government Area.
The family was said to have died after eating Danwake, a local Hausa delicacy.
Police spokesman, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said: “The six members of the family who ate the food were rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital where they were confirmed dead by doctors.
An investigation has commenced to ascertain the real cause of their demise.
“We are still waiting for the medical report from the hospital to ascertain the cause of the death of the six persons.”
