There is an outbreak of Hermorhegic Septicaemia, an animal disease suspected to have killed over 1000 cows in Taraba State.
The disease which wrecked the havoc at Gembu in the Sardauna Local Government Area of the state, was reported to have spread to parts of Gashaka Local Government Area, sharing common border in the south with Adamawa State’s Toungo Local Government Area.
Adamawa State Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture, Dr. Aminu Suleiman Mohammed said the ministry had activated its surveillance throughout the state by mobilising all Divisional Veterinary Officers (DVO) to respond proactively.
He said, “Adamawa State Government has intensified surveillance and monitoring evaluation, across local governments bordering Taraba State in the aftermath of the outbreak of suspected Hermorhegic Septicaemia, an animal disease suspected to have cause the death of more than 1000 cows in Sardauna local government area of the State.
“With the established record of the suspected case in Gembu which also extended to other local government areas of Taraba State, the Ministry immediately summoned all Divisional Veterinary Officers, DVO’s to double efforts and close examination with a view to stop the disease from spreading to Adamawa State.”
Dr. Mohammed who noted that though result of samples taken to the National Veterinary Research Institute, NVRI Laboratory in Vom, Plateau State was being awaited for confirmation, mass vaccination was underway in Taraba State.
Hemorrhagic Septicaemia as a bacterial disease which mostly affects cattle, buffalos, Goats and Pigs, which symptoms comprises high fever, swelling especially in the neck of the animal; causing depression, difficulty in breathing among others.
It can cause the death of the affected animal in less than 24 hours, according to Dr. Mohammed.
