Amidst the ongoing dispute over increased electricity tariffs and a lack of agreement on a new minimum wage, workers across Nigeria have initiated a nationwide strike.

Despite attempts by the National Assembly to mediate and prevent the strike, discussions fell through and the industrial action began.

The strike has impacted various sectors, including businesses, schools, hospitals, and power supply, as workers complied with orders from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Economic activities have come to a standstill in different regions of the country, from River State in the South-South to Kaduna in the North-West.

Airports in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Lagos have been closed, schools have sent students back home, and labour leaders have sealed off government buildings and healthcare facilities.

The NLC and TUC in Edo State have locked up the State Secretariat, denying entry to civil servants, despite the state government’s recent increase in the minimum wage. The unions maintain that the strike is not specifically targeting the state but is following the national directive.
