More drama appears to be brewing in the Rivers State House of Assembly crisis. This time, the Rivers State House of Assembly’s Martins Amaewhule-led group convened a sitting on Thursday. The plenary session was place in the Assembly quarters auditorium on Aba Road in Port Harcourt. This is despite an existing court order prohibiting Amaewhule from presenting himself as Speaker of the House and the Rivers State Government’s destruction of the Assembly complex for restoration following a fire that damaged the hallowed chamber. The Assembly group led by Amaewhule opposed the state government’s demolition of the Assembly structure. Ofiks Kagbang, a legislator from the Andoni constituency, introduced a motion of urgent public significance denouncing the demolition, which was overwhelmingly adopted by the House.
26 lawmakers attended the Thursday session headed by Amaewhule, former Speaker of the House.
During their meeting, the members passed the Rivers State House of Assembly Funds Management (Financial Autonomy) Bill, 2023. They passed the bill after debating the House Committee on Public Accounts’ report. Commenting on Major Jack’s report, Amaewhule stressed the necessity of passing the Bill, which will provide for the management of revenues accruing to the Rivers State House of Assembly from the State’s Consolidated Revenue Fund. According to Amaewhule, the law will ensure accountability and efficient use of finances. The Rivers State Local Government Law, No. 5 of 2018 (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was also passed by the House following a debate on the report of the House Committee on Local Government, which was given by the Committee’s Chairman, Ignatius Onwuka. Meanwhile, the Amaewhule faction of the state Assembly adopted and changed the auditorium of the House of Assembly quarters into its sacred chamber by a move.
