In a recent interview on Arise Television, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Father Mathew Kukah, shared his astonishment at the statements made by former ministers who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
While Bishop Kukah made it clear that he holds no personal grudge against the former president, he raised concerns about the remarks coming from those who served in Buhari’s administration.
According to Kukah, his criticisms of President Buhari were not personal or disrespectful but rather focused on governance and the management of Nigeria’s diversity. He did not name any specific ministers but expressed his shock at the comments being made by some of them.
Bishop Kukah has been known for his outspoken criticism of former President Buhari and his administration, particularly regarding issues of national unity and diversity. He expressed his belief that Buhari’s leadership had made Nigeria more vulnerable and contributed to divisions in the country
As Nigeria now has President Bola Tinubu in power, Kukah noted that while it might be too early to assess his presidency fully, many expected him to hit the ground running due to his long preparation for the role.
Kukah also highlighted the need for a more robust leadership selection process, suggesting that relying on governors and external agencies for ministerial appointments can be limiting. He stressed the importance of holding those in power accountable and the need for clear public policies to guide the country’s direction
In his words;
Buhari has served his term. He also knew and I respect him for that, that there was nothing I was saying that was personal. I imagined poor Adesina and his team had a job to do and they needed to do that job even though there was nothing to say.
“I will respect and I hope that Pastor Adesina knows that there is a Foursquare Gospel Church in Daura, I believe that the President of Foursquare Gospel Church should send him there as a Pastor so that he is quite close to his Godfather.
“But having said that, I mean President Buhari had finished his term and he is gone and there is very little else to be said for and against. But everybody knew we had a job to do. There was nothing I said about President Buhari that was personal, that was disrespectful, I just felt he was doing thing that is, especially in the area of managing our diversity and look, I’m talking to Ministers now who served in that government, I cannot call names, I am shocked to hear the kind of things people are saying, those who served in that government, that is for another day.”
