In an effort to address the challenges of cargo evacuation in African ports, the Federal Government has called for interventions in this aspect.During the 43rd annual council meeting of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa in Lagos, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the need for seamless cargo evacuation as a major challenge faced by ports on the continent

Represented at the event by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, Tinubu stated that the meeting’s theme, ‘The role of ports in the African Continental Free Trade Area’, demonstrates the organizers’ determination to collectively find sustainable solutions for the challenges experienced by port operations in Africa.

He said, “Apart from adequate security and transparency, the competitiveness of ports is determined by the seamlessness and efficiency with which cargoes are evacuated to and from the ports. Undoubtedly, port operations in Africa require significant intervention in this area.”

The president revealed that Nigeria and other African countries are currently engaged in discussions on investing in port infrastructure to support trade facilitation.

He stated, “Of course, there are ongoing discussions in Nigeria and other African countries on the need to urgently invest in infrastructure and equipment to support trade facilitation.”

Meetings like this provide a platform for the generation of ideas that will assist national governments in formulating effective policies,” he added.

Tinubu emphasized that full automation is the way forward.

“As a government that recognizes the importance of incorporating information technology into public management to enhance transparency and streamline business processes, we are fully supporting the Nigerian Ports Authority in expediting the implementation of the port community system, which is a precursor to the National Single Window. We firmly believe that full automation is imperative for us to remain competitive in the global maritime industry.”
