Chief George Uwechue (SAN, FNIALS), a former Chairman of Nigeria’s Body of Benchers, renowned senior lawyer, and traditional leader, has passed away.
According to reliable sources, Chief Uwechue lost his battle with illness on Sunday afternoon. He was a respected and highly decorated legal professional known for his candor and integrity.
Chief George Uwechue, also known as Owelle of Ogwashi Uku, hailed from Delta State and had a distinguished legal career that spanned nearly 60 years. He attended the Middle Temple and the Inns of Court School of Law in London between 1961 and 1965, where he honed his legal expertise.
After completing the Nigerian Law School’s three-month program, he was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1966.
His contributions to the legal profession were highly regarded, and in 1993, he was elevated to the coveted rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He remained a member of the Inner Bar for three decades. In 1990, he was appointed a Member of the Body of Benchers, a position he held until his appointment as Chairman of the Body of Benchers in 2010.Chief George Uwechue was also known for his leadership in Nigeria’s political arena.
He was elected as the Speaker (Pro Tempore) of the House of Representatives on February 23, 1983, and he was elected as a two-term member of the House of Representatives.His impact extended beyond the legal and political spheres, as he played a significant role in community development, setting up structures and creating opportunities for others to thrive in various aspects of life
Chief George Uwechue was also honored with various awards and accolades for his contributions to the legal profession and society. He received an award of excellence from the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, as well as a Diamond Jubilee Merit Award from the Old Boys’ Association of Rimi (St. John’s) College, Kaduna. His achievements were also acknowledged by the Delta State Government, which named a street in Asaba after him.
He was a respected traditional leader and held the title of Owelle Osowa-Anya of Ogwashi-Uku, where he was affectionately referred to as Owelle – The Law.
Chief George Uwechue leaves behind a lasting legacy and a family, including his six children and numerous grandchildren.
His contributions to the legal profession, politics, and community development have left an indelible mark on Nigeria and its legal landscape.
Chief Uwechue was honored with the publication of “LAW IN MOTION: Nurturing Democracy and Development – Essays in Honour of Chief George Uwechue (SAN)” by 35 law professors in November 2013.
He will be remembered as a legal luminary, a dedicated leader, and a highly respected figure in Nigerian society. His passing is a loss to the legal community and the nation at large.
