“Gender Based Violence – Stemming the Tide” A distinguished senior partner in the firm of Jackson, Etti & Edu, one of Africa’s well-regarded full-service commercial law practices, Ohiku plays a pivotal role in leading multiple teams that deliver a wide range of key services to clients of the firm, who place a high premium on Ohiku’s expertise and experience in the specialist field of intellectual property across Africa. Ohiku’s incisive assessments of IP rights – combined with an insightful guidance on how, where and when IP should be protected and commercialized, have won her the admiration and trust of her peers and clients, who include prominent American and European multinational corporations as well as some of Africa’s largest corporations. Her hands-on approach to the issues have helped clients to successfully navigate the complex landscape of international and multinational rights, as well as safeguard, leverage and maximise the value of their assets in an effective and timely manner.
In recognition of her exceptional credentials in this area of law, she was the first (and for several years, the only) Nigerian appointed as a panelist at the WIPO Domain Names Arbitration & Mediation Center in Geneva. In 2002, Ohiku was appointed as a distinguished panel member of the US National Arbitration Forum, to adjudicate on what was then (and probably still is), the largest domain name dispute, involving a renowned cable news network provider, a role she undertook with distinction through WIPO. She has also served as a sole panelist in other cases.
Ohiku was a member of the committee of experts appointed by the federal minister for science & technology in April 2011 to evaluate the alignment of the draft science, technology & innovation policy with IP law. Her indelible impact was evident when the Federal Minister for Commerce entrusted her with the task of conducting a comprehensive study of the Nigerian Trademarks Office with a view to developing a game-changing blueprint to make that office an efficient and forward-thinking one, with well-defined accountability metrics and performance indicators.
With a commitment to advance the IP landscape, Uwa Ohiku’s insights have consistently guided the Federal Government of Nigeria on multifaceted IP-related matters.
Her illustrious career has garnered a plethora of accolades and acknowledgments from various influential quarters within the industry. Business Day recognized her as one of Nigeria’s 50 Most Influential Women in Law in April 2011. On a global scale, Managing Intellectual Property recognised her as the sole Nigerian among the Top 250 Women in Intellectual Property worldwide in 2017. Her contributions have also earned her coveted positions in esteemed legal ranking directories, solidifying her legacy as a well-regarded and respected luminary in the field.
An enthusiastic and passionate public speaker, philanthropist, life coach, health coach, creative writer, horticulturist, and mentor to many, Ohiku is a voracious reader, often reading multiple books at the same time.
Given the calibre of speakers at this year’s Law Week celebrations, members of FIDA Lagos and other intending attendees are urged to make the most of this unique knowledge-sharing opportunity.
