NEWSWIRE Law and Events Magazine’s correspondent in Abuja also recalls also that the Forum, on the 29th of November, 2022 approved the appointment of Ms. Theodora Kio-Lawson as a Co-Opted Council Member entrusted with the position of Publicity Secretary. Kio-Lawson was hitherto the Head of the NBAWF’s Media & Publicity Committee.
These appointments, said Pepple, are meant to enhance the effective governance of the Forum, and to engage with Zonal Council members to ensure robust oversight and nationwide representation of members spanning the various geopolitical zones of the nation. The Council Members were tasked with the supervision of state offices and NBA Branch members, among other responsibilities in a bid to reinforce supervision in the management and running of the activities of the Forum.
On the Forum’s committees, Mrs. Pepple recalled that the NBAWF had 9 standing and one ad-hoc committees at the inception of the current administration, namely: Advocacy; External Relations; Fund Raising; Media and Publicity; Membership; Mentoring; Research and Documentation; Welfare; Young Female Lawyers; and Planning (the last one being an ad- hoc committee). She went on to list, at length, the responsibilities of each committee, its leadership and composition, as well as the highlights of its activities and engagements in the period under review.
On the creation of new committees to better execute the aims and terms of reference of the Forum, and to reflect the robust and dynamic nature of the practice of law by female lawyers, the Secretary said the Council approved the creation of two new ones, namely, the Corporate Counsel and Public Sector Committees.
On committee leadership, she said the Forum undertook a significant reorganization of the various committee leadership profiles of the Forum, either as a result of former officers moving into Council, or personal issues beyond their control. The new officers, are comprised of the Committee Heads, the Deputy Committee Heads and the Coordinator who also serves as the secretary, clearly reflecting the geographical spread of the country. All officers, said Mrs. Pepple, have demonstrated their willingness to support the Executive Committee and the newly appointed members Governing Council.
Mrs. Pepple also highlighted a wide range of issues, among them Secretariat Innovations; New Member Onboarding; Efficient Operation of Online Payment Portals; Meetings (both in-person and virtual) and their Outcomes; and Membership Modalities and Dues.
The NBAWF Secretary concluded her comprehensive presentation by affirming that the Chinyere Okorocha-led administration has effectively capitalized on the accomplishments of its predecessor, and is fully committed to further augmenting its efforts with the unwavering backing of members and other stakeholders. Pepple saluted the various state leads and branch facilitators whose dedicated endeavours, she said, have been instrumental in realising the Forum’s objectives, especially at the grassroots level. She also urged those who have encountered obstacles in the performance of their duties to maintain a positive attitude and to persistently work towards the empowerment and success of female lawyers within their respective states and branches.
NEWSWIRE Magazine correspondent also reports that Mrs Pepple’s report was followed by that of the Treasurer, Mrs. Mercy Ijato Agada, who presented the Financial Statement, on the basis of established accounting policies and in accordance with the findings of an Abuja-based company of certified accountants, Danusman & Partners, and delivered on August 16, 2023.
