The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the withholding of 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results from students in eight states of the federation.
The decision comes as a result of the indebtedness of these states to the council, as disclosed during a press briefing held in Lagos by the Head of National Office, Mr. Patrick Areghan. The examination was concluded 44 days ago, and the results were expected to be released, but certain states’ outstanding debts led to the withholding.
While Mr. Areghan expressed confidence that some of the affected states would settle their dues soon, he identified Zamfara and Niger as the highest debtors. He refrained from mentioning the remaining states involved.
The total amount owed by the indebted states runs into hundreds of millions of naira. It was also revealed that Zamfara State did not present any candidates for this year’s WASSCE.
Candidates from states that have fulfilled their financial obligations to the council can access their results on the Council’s website: www.waecdirect.org.
After accessing their results, candidates can visit www.waec.org to confirm, share, and download digital copies of their certificates. Copies of the Result Listing will be sent to schools shortly. The Head of National Office stated, “The results of candidates sponsored by states indebted to the Council will not be released now until they pay up. We appeal to them to do so to enable the affected schools/candidates to access their results.”
Despite the challenges faced, including insecurity, non-adherence to registration deadlines, financial issues, inflation, and rogue website operators, WAEC has made efforts to release over 91% of the candidates’ results. Of the total 1,613,733 candidates who sat for the examination, 1,361,608 candidates, representing 84.38%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects. Additionally, 1,287,920 candidates, representing 79.81%, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023, officially ended on June 23, 2023. Today, Monday, August 7, 2023, the result is being released, marking 44 days after the conduct of the last paper.
Areghan emphasized that WAEC has continuously modernized its product and service delivery to enhance the quality of service to all stakeholders. Despite the challenges faced during the examination, the council has completed all processes leading to the release of the 2023 WASSCE results for School Candidates in Nigeria.
Of the candidates who sat for the examination, 794,280 were males, while 819,453 were females, representing 49.22% and 50.78%, respectively.
Regarding the 137,168 candidates (8.5%) whose results are still being processed due to some shortcomings, Areghan assured that they will receive their full results in a few days.
Moreover, candidates who sat for the 2023 WASSCE and have no pending issues can simultaneously access their results and certificates, providing them with easy access to their academic achievements.
