The Management of NEWSWIRE Multimedia Limited, publishers of NEWSWIRE Law & Events Magazine, rejoices with one of Nigeria’s human rights and civil society icons, Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani (fondly known as MOU) on his birthday.

On this auspicious occasion, sir, we reflect on your eventful and inspirational life-journey, from your humble beginnings in Awomukwu in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State, where you had your early education, to your later sojourn in Lagos where your educational journey sailed towards its climax. Your time at the prestigious University of Nigeria, (Enugu Campus) where you eventually gained a law degree, and then at the Nigerian Law School in Lagos, was one that afforded you the chance to prove your intellectual mettle.

Your educational pedigree – which also includes a Master of Laws degree from UNILAG, and a Doctor of Laws degree from Babcock – has truly been a stepping-stone to greater things to come.

Your law firm, Ubani & Co., which you founded in 1992 and currently serve as Principal Partner, has been a platform upon which you have showcased your sagacity, commitment to high standards, fidelity to the best interest of your clients, and progressive leadership qualities. No less notable has been your stewardship as Chairman of one of the biggest branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), namely, the Ikeja Branch (between 2012 and 2014), a memorable tenure which brought about remarkable improvements in the fortunes of the Branch – to universal acclamation.

We recall with nostalgia, sir, your tenure as the 2nd National Vice President of the NBA between 2016 to 2018, during which time you built bridges of friendship within and beyond the confines of the NBA, and enhanced the quality of it’s engagements with government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), as well as corporate organizations, NGOs, security agencies, high-networth individuals and others – many of whom you also serve as a solicitor and advocate.

We note with pride the indelible accomplishments you achieved as the immediate past Chairman of the NBA’s Section of Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL) from 2021 to 2023 – during which time you raised the profile of the Section to the high heavens, a far-cry from it’s near-oblivion before your coming.

Your reputation as a man of the people cannot be contested, as can be seen from the long list of socio-cultural, professional and faith-based organizations – within and outside Nigeria – that are privileged to count you as a member.

As a lawyer, a notary public of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, a social critic, a political activist, a community leader and a commentator on topical national issues, both orally (in numerous interviews, lectures, panel discourses and other interventions in Nigeria and abroad) and in writing (in numerous articles in and opinion pieces), you have, time and again, demonstrated your steadfast and unflinching commitment to the rule of law in our country, and the good ordering of our society. Your highly insightful programme “Know Your Right with Barr. Ubani” on Radio Continental, Lagos has been a rich resource that has helped numerous listeners get redress for wrongs done them, or at least a deeper understanding of their legal rights and obligations as citizens.

It is no wonder, then, that you are the recipient of a veritable avalanche of well-deserved awards, prizes and other recognitions from various quarters across and beyond the legal ecosystem.

As if these various interventions on behalf of society’s downtrodden are not enough, you have also carved a niche as a generous philanthropist. Your NGO, the Monday Ubani Foundation has rightfully received tremendous commendation – from both the lowly, whose lives you have impacted in so many fundamental ways – and the high and mighty, who have come to know of the work of the Foundation in the course of their interface with its activities.

The Foundation’s collaboration with various corporate organizations (such as the MTN in the famous case of Little Miss Somaya in 2013) was one of many high points in the work of a Foundation which has disbursed millions of naira to needy but valuable humans as they strive for a better life for themselves and their families. The chronicle of intangible services you have rendered, such as free legal advice to victims of injustice and abuse, is also littered with many high points.

As an advocate of good governance and quality leadership in Nigeria – and your home state of Abia in particular, for which cause you have been relentless and unabashed in your advocacy – it is not hard to see the delight with which you have embraced the ascension to power of an epitome of servant-leadership, Dr. Alex Otti (a man after your heart) as Governor of Abia State, an outcome for which you and other Abia patriots fought with vigour, tenacity and resilience – thanks to your belief in the supremacy of popular will as the very lifeblood of democracy.

As you mark yet another milestone in your journey, sir, we at NEWSWIRE pray that the Almighty God will grant you good health, wisdom and all sufficiency in the years. And may your family – in the persons of your wife, Mrs. Faustina Onyinye Ubani, and your lovely children – continually bring you profound joy in Jesus’ mighty name . Amen.
