Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has stressed the need for Nigeria to fully uphold the rule of law if its democracy is to thrive.
Adeleke stated this in a message to mark Independence Day, describing the 65th anniversary of Nigeria’s freedom as a crucial moment to reflect on constitutional democracy, governance, and respect for the judiciary.
Nigeria celebrates Independence Day every October 1 to commemorate its freedom from British colonial rule in 1960.
The day is marked nationwide with presidential addresses, official ceremonies, cultural performances, and community festivities, with schools and state governments also organising special programmes.
This year, however, the federal government cancelled the usual military parades.
“We have made progress but we can move faster and better. We should continue to protect the foundation of our national existence. The Constitution and its interpretation by a truly independent judiciary. Judicial process must be respected as it is the only legitimate vehicle to regulate relationships among players in the democratic space and among Nigerians at large,” Governor Adeleke said.
The governor congratulated President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians, while urging the political class to pursue true federalism through devolution of powers and resources to strengthen federating units.
“Nigeria must run truly as a federation where all tiers of government operate with clear regulations as provided by the constitution and moderated by the rule of law. This will fast-track development at all levels of governance,” he added.
Adeleke further pledged that his administration in Osun State would continue to uphold constitutional principles and democratic rules while working to deliver good governance. He also urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewumi, in a separate statement, called for patriotism, purposeful leadership, and collective resolve as Nigeria marks its 65th Independence anniversary.
Oyewumi said the celebration should inspire unity, service, and visionary leadership, rather than mere rhetoric.
He urged citizens to play active roles in democratic processes, respect the rule of law, and contribute to national growth, while imploring leaders to rise above partisan interests, ensure accountability, and prioritise citizens’ welfare.
