A 50-old well digger, Yusuf Nadabo, has lost life while re-digging a partially blocked well in Kano, Kano State.
The spokesman for the Kano Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a press statement on Saturday.
“The walls of the well suddenly caved in, covering the distressed digger with sand,” he said.
According to Abdullahi, only Nadabo, who was inside the well at the time of the incident was trapped, while the other two persons assisting him outside the well were unhurt.
He said, “On Thursday, 9th January, 2025, at about 11:40 am, the State Fire Service received a call for emergency assistance from one Bashir Namadi, who reported the collapse of a well at Gargajiga town in Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State.
“The tragic incident affected three persons while re-digging and repairing the well. One was inside, while the other two were outside when the sides of the well suddenly caved in, covering the man working inside the well with sand while the other two assisting him outside the well were unhurt.
“Following the tragic incident, our rescue team for emergency aid from the department headquarters were mobilised to the scene of the incident, and arrived at about 12:20 pm.
“They swung into action and succeeded in rescuing two persons alive, while the other, Yusuf Nadabo of about 50 years old, was rescued unconscious but later confirmed dead by the Doctor on duty at the hospital he was rushed to for emergency treatment.”
Meanwhile, all the victims have been handed over to the ward head of Gargajiga town for further action.
