The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State, Bridget Asekhauno, has said no fewer than 21 persons lost their lives while 144 were injured in road crashes that occurred across the state between January and October, 2025.

Asekhauno disclosed this on Monday during a press conference to flag off the 2025 “Ember months” public enlightenment campaign, themed, ‘Take responsibility for your safety: Stop distracted driving’.

According to her, the number of casualties was recorded in 57 crashes, attributing most of them to overspeeding.

She said some of the activities lined up for the “ember months” campaign include a motorcade rally and a town hall meeting to sensitise road users and stakeholders on the need to take their safety more seriously.

She said, “No fewer than 21 persons lost their lives while 144 were injured in road crashes that occurred across the state between January and October, 2025. The casualties resulted from about 57 crashes.

“We are commencing the 2025 ‘Ember months’ public enlightenment campaign, themed, ‘Take responsibility for your safety: Stop distracted driving’.

“We will be having a motorcade rally across the state, especially parks to sensitise road users, including drivers to ensure they take responsibility for their safety by avoiding distractive driving.

“We will also be having a town hall meeting where we’re going to invite drivers, road users and other traffic agencies to ensure we’re on the same page.

“On our officers, we will keep training and retraining them during in-house training. We brief our men every morning to ensure they are at the utmost best.

“If you see any of them who misbehave doesn’t mean they lack training. You will always have deviants in any organisation.”

Delivering the address of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, the Sector Commander quoted him as saying the choice of the 2025 end-of-year campaign theme was to address road traffic infringements by drivers largely responsible for previous road crash records.

“The 2024 Operation Zero (15 December, 2024 – 15 January 2025) crash statistics revealed that 432 persons were killed; 2,070 persons were injured out of 533 reported cases of road crashes.

“The records also showed that the major causes of those crashes were driver fatigue, and overloading of persons,

“Conveyance of persons in haulage vehicles and travelling with fuel in plastic containers.

“Apparently, driver behaviour is a fundamental element in determining safety on our highways.

“The theme reinforces the view that human factor is one of the major causes of road crashes. It also draws attention to the fact that drivers are largely responsible for crashes on our highways.

“As we are all aware, the ember months are a season marked by increased travel, higher traffic volume and attendant rise in road crash injuries and fatalities,” the Corp Marshall statement said.

The corps marshal appreciated the media for its unwavering commitment to advancing road safety enlightenment, while assuring them of continuous collaboration as a critical platform for sensitisation.

This development follows a PUNCH Online’s earlier report in which FRSC announced that no fewer than 3,400 people were killed in road crashes across Nigeria between January and September 2025.

During the same period, 22,162 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a total of 6,858 reported crashes.

The statistics were disclosed by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed on Monday in Abuja at a press conference marking the official flag-off of the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign.

“3,433 persons were killed and 22,162 persons injured out of a total of 6,858 reported road crashes between January and September, 2025,” he said.
