With less than two years to Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing internal divisions over the possible return of two major political figures — former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Some members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) see their comeback as a strategic boost to PDP’s electoral chances, while others remain skeptical, citing concerns about loyalty after both men left the party at critical moments.
According to party insiders, there has been no official approach from the PDP leadership to either Jonathan or Obi. Rather, preliminary contact has been made by individuals acting in their personal capacities. Party leaders have emphasized that any return would be subject to existing PDP rules, with no special concessions granted to either man. They maintain that loyalty and commitment to the party’s cause will be non-negotiable.
Supporters of Jonathan and Obi argue that their political stature, national recognition, and proven voter appeal could help unite the opposition and energize the PDP base ahead of 2027. However, critics counter that the PDP already has a strong pool of potential candidates, including prominent governors such as Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, both of whom have steadily built their influence within the party.
The debate over Jonathan’s eligibility remains unresolved, as constitutional provisions limit a president to two terms. While Jonathan served as president between 2010 and 2015, legal interpretations differ on whether he can contest again. Peter Obi, for his part, has stated publicly that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party, signaling no immediate intention to return to the PDP fold.
Meanwhile, the PDP is gearing up for its elective national convention in November 2025 and has inaugurated a zoning committee to determine power-sharing arrangements ahead of the polls. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the PDP’s internal maneuvering, insisting that President Bola Tinubu will secure re-election regardless of who the opposition fields as its candidate.
