A former national General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), *Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN,* has been elected the 32nd President of the NBA.
According to the official results of the 2024 NBA elections held from midnight Saturday, July 20, through Sunday, July 21, 2024, Osigwe (who also served at one time as the Chairman of the Abuja Branch of the Association) polled a total of 20,435 votes, to finish on top of a formidable 3-man field. His closest rival, Tobenna Chigbo Erojikwe, polled 10, 998 votes to finish second, while a former Chairman of the Lagos branch of the NBA, *Chukwuka Nwabueze Ikwuazom, SAN* finished third with a total vote tally of 9,018.
In the results of the polls, which were conducted electronically and monitored by NEWSWIRE Law & Events magazine, the official portal of the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), showed that the office of the General Secretary of the NBA was won by *Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara* , who polled a total of 25,713 to beat his sole opponent, Abdulwasiu Alfa to the job. The new General Secretary-elect will be assisted by *Henry Barnabas Ehi* , who polled 28,552 votes to beat his only opponent, Oluwaseun Aka.
Other results showed that the role of 1st Vice-President of the Association went to *Sabastine Anyia* , who scored 12,114 votes to beat a crowded field comprising five other candidates.
The job of 2nd Vice-President was clinched by a former Vice-Chairman of the Lagos Bar *, Bolatumi Olasumbo Animashaun* , who scored 26,534 votes to get the better of her only opponent, Pius Idemudia Oiwoh.
It was also a big night for *Zainab Aminu Garba* , who polled 23,550 votes to defeat her sole rival, Michael Olanrewaju Olorunmola, in the race for 3rd Vice-President.
*Blessing Imo Udofa-Poromon* is set to become the next national Treasurer of the NBA, following her victory over the pair of Chukwuemeka Mbamala and Caroline Obi. Udofa-Poromon scored 17,998 votes to secure the position.
The office of National Welfare Secretary was won by *Nyada Auta* , who won 18,369 votes to beat the pair of Oaikhena Osagie and Ernest Ejindu Uwanaka to second and third respectively.
*Bridget Ijeoma Edokwe* was elected the new Publicity Secretary of the NBA with a total of 19,542. She out-polled two other contenders, Charles Ajiboye and Ferdinand Naza, to secure the position, while *Ebiere Emmanuella Ekpese* beat her only opponent, Lawrence Ayewa, with a vote tally of 26,955 to clinch the position of Assistant Publicity Secretary.
The 2024 elections also saw the formal election of the following officers to serve as NBA Representatives to the General Council (Eastern Zone):
– Augustine Osondu Ike
– Daniel Ka-Ayip Kip
– Eric Chigozie Ibe
– Michael Chukwurah Onuorah, and
– Obi Lawrence Anizoba
The NBA Representatives to the General Council from the Western Zone are as follows:
– Israel Solomon Lagbamue
– Kingsley Asagba
– Olukunle Ogheneovo Edun
– Precious Ndidi Nwadimuyah, and
– Sulayman Adamu Dawud
The sole NBA Representative to the General Council will be Tijani Magaji.
The new NBA President-elect, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN (who is set to take over from the outgoing President, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, at the end of the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Association in Lagos in August) has held many notable Bar positions at branch and national levels, Osigwe, who was called to the Bar in 1999, is a Life Bencher – one of the youngest in recent history. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), Osigwe began his legal career in the Abuja offices of Chike Chigbue & Co, before founding The Law Forte (which he currently runs as Senior Partner) in 2002.
A notary public of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Osigwe’s practice has traversed wide areas of law, including: corporate and commercial law, land law, banking law, intellectual property law, telecommunications law, energy, as well as domestic and international arbitration.
Osigwe will serve at the helm of the new national executive of the NBA for a two-year tenure, from 2024 to 2026.
