Ahead of the 2023 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP), the Conference Planning Committee paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon. Justice Johnson Tsoho.
Led by its Chairman, Paul Harris Ogbole, SAN, the CPC team also included the alternate Chair and NBA Branch Chairmen across the FCT, as well as the Consultant to the CPC.
Stating the reason for the visit at this time, Ogbole described the NBA-SLP as the Section that deals with the core practice of the legal profession – ranging from litigation to other ancillary matters – and emphasised the need for lawyers to periodically train themselves through Conferences and seminars. On the theme of the Conference, *’LEGAL PRACTICE BEYOND BORDERS,’* the CPC Chair reiterated the role of lawyers as the mouthpiece of the Bench in their bid to ensure better welfare for judicial workers, which in turn will aid the growth of legal practice in Nigeria. Ogbole also extended a formal invitation to the CJ, FHC (as a special guest of honour and chair of one of the panel sessions) as well as other Judges in the FHC, Abuja to attend the SLP confab, appealing to Justice Tsoho to use his good office to allow for court-free days for the duration of the Conference to enhance attendance by members of both the Bench and the Bar in the FCT.
In his response, Justice Tsoho expressed his opinion that the Conference theme would engender a more outward-looking disposition among members of the legal profession, beyond the constraints of their immediate environment, scope of expertise, experience, and sphere of influence. Thanking the SLP for identifying with the FHC, the CJ stated that the Bar and Bench belong to the same constituency, with each complementing the other’s role – for which each should always stand up for the other. He encouraged lawyers to be more forthcoming with their views about matters affecting the judiciary, and to be more steadfast in protecting the interest of both the privileged and underprivileged in our society. The CJ also decried the practice on the part of lawyers who take on litigation for the sole purpose of attaining to the coveted rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), thereby perverting the dignity of the rank
To the delight of the visitors, Justice Tsoho acceded to their request for two court-free days for the stated purpose, stating also that due to paucity of funds, the FHC would make a limited contribution towards the Conference – chiefly in the area of logistics to ease movements of participants at the event.
The vote of thanks was given by Tonye Kukrubo, SAN on behalf of the CPC.
The 2023 SLP confab is billed to hold at the NBA national secretariat in Abuja from the 16th to the 19th of July.
