2019 NBA General Conference Will Expand Lawyers’ Horizons – Oyebode
The Chairman of the Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP) for the 2019 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Gbenga Oyebode, MFR, has promised prospective participants that the gathering would present a unique opportunity to get to grips with the key issues of our time, courtesy of its intellectual content and the quality of interactions that would take place in the course of the event.

These engagements, he said, would have far-reaching ramifications well beyond the scope and time-frame of the Conference – in line with its theme, ‘Facing the Future.’
Oyebode was speaking in Lagos to law reporters on the sidelines of a press briefing by the TCCP in the countdown to the 59th edition of the NBA’s annual gathering of lawyers from all the bar branches pan-Nigeria, as well as leading lights in the worlds of politics and policy, business, the professions, academia and the media.
The TCCP chair assured that the Conference, to be held at the Convention Hall of the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos from the 23rd to the 29th of August, 2019 would beam a laser-like searchlight on the technological innovations currently transforming the face of our world on all fronts – including their expected impact on the future of work (especially the delivery of legal services). A formidable faculty of distinguished speakers from the four corners of the globe, he said, would lead discussions on how to anticipate and navigate these changes, maximize the opportunities they will present, and the threats they will pose – especially to current professional competencies on the part of lawyers and law firms.
Oyebode urged lawyers to be ready to make significant changes in their work culture, career paths and even personal lifestyles, and be prepared to overthrow entrenched paradigms – or risk dwindling into professional irrelevance in the face of these changes. He also called on policymakers at the helm of affairs in the country to develop the political will to address current economic and security challenges facing our country today, as well as emerging threats, with knowledge and skill, as well as by developing wholistic solutions unencumbered by primordial considerations.
He expressed happiness at the expected turnout for this year’s Conference, which he estimated would hit the 12,000 mark at the end of the current online registration exercise. This number, he said, was a testimony of the confidence Nigerian lawyers reposed in the NBA executive’s ability to deliver a conference experience that would be worth their while.
