It is a great honour and privilege for me to welcome our special guests, guest speakers, delegates and friends of the Nigerian Bar Association to our 57th annual conference.
To our guests who are coming to Nigeria for the first time, allow me to say a warm welcome to Africa’s heartbeat. Welcome to Lagos, Nigeria’s centre of excellence, the commercial hub and cultural melting-pot of the entire sub-region of West Africa.
The theme of this year’s conference, “African Business: Penetrating through strong Institutions” is a timely and instructive one indeed, coming at a time in the life of our continent, and our country in particular, when the need for us to evolve strong political, economic and social institutions (as opposed to running our affairs according to the arbitrary whims and caprices of strong individuals and exclusive cabals) is being increasingly recognized and widely advocated.
It is our hope and expectation that this conference – in the course of its various presentations, sessions and panel discussions, will provide a proactive and practical template to advance our collective quest for a political, economic and social order based on strong institutions governed by the rule of law. For it is in the evolution of such institutions that we can rightly place our hopes of a just, egalitarian, cohesive and prosperous society, not just for ourselves but for our children and children’s children.
