Compliment of the season and Happy New Week to all our distinguished learned members of the Eastern Bar Forum and esteemed colleagues whose practice is domiciled in the old Eastern region. You will recall that at the NBA NEC Meeting held at Ilorin, Kwara State from 28th February – 1st March, 2018 at the Banquet Hall, opposite the Kwara State Government House, certain fundamental decisions were reached which inter alia include the following:
1) Branches were given 30days from 1st March, 2018, to exhaustively deliberate on the recommendations of the Mallam Yusuf Olaole Ali, SAN-led NBA Constitution Review Committee Report that among other things strongly recommended the replacement of Branches of the NBA with State Bars. Copies of this report have been forwarded to Branch Chairmen, SANs and NEC Representatives.
2) Branches were also directed to do an indepth study of the KPMG Report on changing or replacing the present NBA Governance structure and dynamics to having a structure predicated on the current global Corporate Organizational structure with a Chief Executive Officer and other professionals that will oversee its operations and activities while the present NBA NEC will be
constituted into a Board to monitor and or supervise the operations of the Management of the NBA.
The memoranda on the above should reach the Mallam Yusuf O. Ali, SAN – led Committee and the President of the NBA respectively not later than 31st March, 2018.
Branch Chairmen are hereby directed and encouraged by His Excellency, the Governor of the EBF, Chief Arthur Elvis Chukwu, ACIArb., KSJI., to as a matter of priority, immediately convene Emergency Branch General Meetings for the quick evaluations, analysis and resolutions of the above-mentioned situations.
Note: We are bewildered as to the rationale behind the insistence by NBA National on the creation of State Bars in spite of previous formidable and vehement opposition to their creation. We need to act fast because should we sleep on our rights and National has its way, our independence as Branches will forever become extinct.
