Dr. Dura Now Chairperson FIDA Benue Branch after a Keenly Contested Election
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Benue Branch, Nigeria, held its General Elections for Executive Council Committee on Friday 14th September, 2018, in Benue State.
The new Executive is made up of renowned legal professionals with wealth of experience in various aspects of litigation and human rights work spanning well over two decades.These esteemed women are experts in their own right.
After the keenly contested battle, Dr. M.M. Dura emerged as the Chairperson-elect of the FIDA Benue branch with a total votes of 85 against her closest rival.
Barr. Mrs. Prisca Ula was elected Vice Chairman also with 85 votes, while the elected Secretary, Barr. Mrs. Debbie Amine pulled 81 votes.
The results show that all offices were closely contested with members voting massively for all positions.
The elected New Executives are:
1. Dr. M.M. Dura Chairperson with 85 votes
2. Barr. Mrs. Prisca Ula Vice Chairman with 85 votes
3. Barr. Mrs. Debbie Amine Secretary with 81 votes
4. Barr. Mrs. Regina Alashi Assistant Secretary with 81 votes.
5. Barr. Mrs. Terfa Suswam Treasurer with 83 votes
6. Barr. Mrs. Blessing Tyohuun Financially Secretary with 83 votes
7. Barr. Mrs. Awashima Addingi Publicity Secretary with 83 votes
8. Barr. Mrs. Hembafan Utange Assistant Publicity Secretary with 80 votes
With Dr. M.M. Dura as Chairperson, FIDA Benue is set for litigation to ensure that women and children indeed obtain redress where their rights are proven to have been violated, and particularly test the strength of the VAPP Act.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Dura assured everyone that she is ready to take the organisation (FIDA Benue) to the next level while ensuring that she maintains the momentum already created by FIDA Nigeria.
After the announcement of results, the certificate of return was presented to Dr. M.M. Dura by the Electoral Committee Chairman, Chief Dr. Caroline Ashar-Ekpendu.
The event was concluded with the dissolution of the Electoral Committee and the handing over by the outgoing executives.
