Veteran Lawyer Attacks Disunity & Inequity at 2017 NBA Lagos Law Dinner
At 89, Pa Tunji Gomez has seen many of the ups and down of the legal profession in Nigeria. He is a veteran of numerous courtroom battles – in which he deployed not only his deep and incisive knowledge of the law, but also his rhetorical prowess to best the opposition.
His commitment to justice has given him a fearless penchant for speaking truth to power, no matter whose ox is gored.
As NEWSWIRE’S correspondent tells us, those attributes were on display on Friday, December 9, 2017, at the Annual Law Dinner of the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) during which he was honoured for his contributions to the Bar.
Pa Gomez – who is known to have waged a long-standing battle to abolish the ‘Senior Advocate of Nigeria’ institution, and the privileges associated with it – began in typical fashion by accusing SANs of ‘dividing the Bar,’ and of elevating themselves to the status of demigods among their legal kindred.
The octogenarian was emphatic in his call for a review of the NBA rules which over the years have precluded non-SANs from aspiring to the highest positions in the national body.
‘STOP STEALING BRIEFS FROM YOUNG LAWYERS!’ Pa Gomez thundered, as he called for better working conditions for young lawyers employed in established chambers, and warned that senior lawyers who persisted in behavior designed to perpetuate inequities within the bar would be ‘ostracized’ by the rest of their colleagues – who, he pointed out, were more numerous, and therefore more powerful, than they were.
