Tribute Galore as George & Efosa Etomi Host 2019 NBA Lagos Elders’ Night

The first day ended on a rather mellow note with the 2019 edition NBA Lagos branch Elders Night – designed to honour and recognize the contributions of older members of the Lagos Bar. Held at the residence of George Etomi, Lead Partner at George Etomi & Partners, the evening was graced by the cream of the legal profession from across and beyond the Lagos bar. A rare appearance by former Cross River State Governor and 2019 presidential candidate, Donald Duke, added to an already star-studded evening.

Anchored by Aderemi Oguntoye, the evening opened with speeches of welcome by NBA Lagos chairman Chukwuka Ikwuazom and the host, Etomi. Ikwuazom highlighted the advances made in recent years (and especially during his 2-year stewardship) and called for more regular attendance by the senior members of the bar.  On his part, Etomi paid tribute to the Ikwuazom-led executive of the Lagos NBA – and more generally, the younger leaders of the branch – for bringing about a more vibrant and innovative profile in the branch, as well as enhancing her fortunes in no small way. Thanks to their forward-looking and result-oriented leadership, he said, there is no obsession with primordial considerations such as ethnicity and religion, as was the case in the past. Competition among lawyers – in court, at least – is an undeniable fact of life, but the professional bond among them has been strengthened in the Lagos bar as a result of the efforts of Ikwuazom and others, who have made transparency and mentorship their watchword. This paradigm shift, Etomi said, has shown the potential of the Lagos bar to lead the larger Nigerian bar away from the prevailing culture of mediocrity and timidity in the face of our many national challenges.

One of the highlights of the evening was a saxophone performance by Phebean, a female artiste who thrilled the crowd with a masterful rendering of a number of all-time favorites from different periods in Nigeria’s rich pop music history – beginning with Fela’sAnikulapo-Kuti’s ‘Lady.’

The closing remarks and vote of thanks, which brought the evening to a close, were delivered by the chairman of the 2019 Lagos Law Week Planning Committee, Tola Oshobi, SAN, as the thoroughly satisfied guests looked forward to more intellectual and social stimulation on the second and final day of the Law Week programme, which would feature more panel discussions and end with an all-white Closing Party.
