Successful Transitions: Abubakar, Jega Harp on Re-Orientation & Restoration of Values Among Stakeholders

A former Nigerian head of state, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (Retd,) GCFR, and a former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, have offered key pointers on managing the process of democratic transitions in Nigeria and beyond.

The two men made their assertions at the ongoing Annual General Conference of the NBA.  Since he restored civil rule in Nigeria in 1999 – after just eleven months in power at a critical juncture in the country’s chequered history – Gen. Abubakar has led or taken part in election and transition monitoring missions across the world, his most recent assignment being the just-concluded general elections in Pakistan.

Drawing on his experience in this regard, the elder statesman outline the factors that make for – or mar – peaceful transitions, especially in Nigeria and other parts of the continent. He concluded by calling on political actors and other stakeholders to adhere to the principle of due process, which not only ensures credible polls but also helps to build institutions that all can trust. Having done so, he said, they must accept the outcomes of such due process in good faith.

Also speaking, the immediate past chairman of the independent national electoral commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, also spoke of the desirability (as opposed to the feasibility) of outcomes, and called for a new orientation among the political class, and greater education of the electorate on the issues at stake.

He also emphasized the important roles civil society organisations, professional bodies such as the NBA, and the media can play. Unfortunately, however, he added, the advent of social media has posed new challenges to the quest for due process as far as transitions are concerned – as it can, in addition to its many undoubted benefits, also be the purveyor of fake news, hate speech, among other negative practices.
