Sajid Javid Picked as Chancellor in First Boris Johnson Appointment
Boris Johnson has become Britain’s new prime minister after Theresa May tendered her resignation to the Queen. Mrs. May made a final address at Prime Minister’s Questions before travelling to Buckingham Palace, where Mr. Johnson was invited to form a new government. He has made a first speech before entering Number 10 to begin forming his cabinet.
Sajid Javid, the first person from an ethnic minority to be appointed to run the Treasury, is expected to oversee an expansion of public spending in an attempt to prepare the economy for the turbulence of Brexit, writes the FT’s George Parker. The former home secretary has previously advocated a £100bn infrastructure fund over the next five years and £50bn for housing, supported by higher borrowing, as well as a programme to recruit 20,000 police officers.
At the same moment, the former Brexit secretary, Dominic Raab has been picked as foreign secretary, replacing Jeremy Hunt. He’ll also be first secretary of state – which could make him effectively Johnson’s deputy prime minister.
