RE: MONEY FOR VOTE – THE BANE OF NBA POLITICS: Indifference to The Welfare of Young Lawyers is The Bane of Legal Practice – By Douglas Ogbankwa, Esq.
“Your greatness is not in what you have, but in what you give.” – Anonymous
I came across, a write up on “NBA Matters”, a WHATSSAP Platform, written by one Chidi Udekwe with the above question querying the show of love and charity to Lawyers in this economic Downturn occasioned by the Convid-19 Virus.
The Writer spurned the narrative to give the false impression that the Show of love and Benevolence by some well meaning Bar Men at this moment smacks of money politics. That narrative however seems to be an over used cliche, as the indifference to the Welfare of Young Lawyers is a worse scenario than showing generosity by what ever guise.
The Writer however did not show what the beneficiaries of the magnanimity of the givers suffered by the show of love and Charity by the benefactors. The truth is that they actually benefitted a lot and lost nothing.
I always say this: Talk is cheap .Action is expensive. Charity is a phenomenon that ordinarily appeals to all, if not for the vagaries of Politics.
The truth is Lawyers all across Nigeria are living in dire circumstances. Courts are shut and other places there are in total lockdown.
No matter how small a show of love and support is at this trying period for some Lawyers, it will go a long way to support our Members. There is a deluge of support cris-crossing all Professions and Groups? Why should the Bar be left out ?Should a Person that has a tract record of giving, not give now that the giving is needed most, just because he is contesting an Election? Such argument falls within the strand of Red Herring.
Those who give this Period should be commended instead of being vilified, especially when such benevolent characters have tract records of giving.
If we all give one way or the other or for any reason for that matter, this World will be a better place.
I wish you all all a blissful Easter and in the spirit of sacrifice, that this season represents, Let the love show!
