PDP, APC Clash over Dakingari’s Defection

The Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the defection of a former governor, Sa’idu Dakingari and some top members of the party, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)  as undemocratic.

In a phone interview, the public relations officer of the party, Ibrahim Umar Ummai, said the decampees were misled into taking the decision, judging by their reasons.

“They said they are joining the APC because of the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Atiku Bagudu. But what did the governor do to the people of the state in the last two years? He virtually did nothing,” he said.

According to Ummai, Governor Bagudu only succeeded in abandoning some of the projects started by his predecessor, citing the State Polytechnic in Dakingari, the state civil service secretariat and some road projects.

“So, for them to now hinge their defection on the purported achievements of Governor Bagudu is uncalled for, undemocratic and laughable,” he added.

He said the decampees would soon realise their mistakes and make a u-turn by returning to the PDP.

Reacting, the spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Sani Dododo, said the PDP could not dictate what to do for the former governor and his supporters, stressing that they were mature enough to decide their political journey.

Dododo said there was nothing undemocratic in the defection because PDP in Kebbi State was dead.

“They joined the APC out of their  own wish and conviction that Kebbi State is working under the able leadership of Governor Bagudu. The state is now peaceful with gigantic projects and other agricultural activities taking place across its nooks and crannies,” he said

He said the present government had been fulfilling its promises to the electorate by not only investing on infrastructures, education and health, but also paying salaries of workers as at when due despite the current economic challenges in the country.

Dododo, who spoke to our reporter on phone, assured the decampees that they would be treated like any other member of the party without any form of discrimination.

It would be recalled that the former deputy governor of the state, Ibrahim Aliyu, said they dumped the PDP in order to move Kebbi State forward.
