Police intimidation on lawyers must be stopped. I am deeply worried about the way the Nigerian Police detain, harass and assault lawyers. I have said it often that we must rise up as a body of learned men and confront this menace once and for all. For how long shall we continue to watch helplessly as the police reduce us to nothing in this country?
If a senior lawyer like our own Onari Taylor Harry, a member of the NBA, Dagama Branch can be detained and treated like this, I wonder what will happen to younger lawyers. Let me sound a warning that we are gradually becoming an endangered specie. Everyday our colleagues are been arrested for performing their professional duties.
Our colleague Harry is detained by the police for carrying his role as a lawyer. Today it is Harry, tomorrow it may be you or me.
We must as a group of learned gentlemen come to the rescue of Onari Taylor Harry and all other lawyers suffering from the same faith. During our training as lawyers, we were taught that we are first among equals and as such we should be treated with dignity.
If we do not come together and savage ourselves, by the time the police finish subjugating us as they are doing now, your guess will be as good as mine. We must resist this with all our might.
I therefore urge all members of the NBA to rise up against this illegal destination of our own ONARI TAYLOR HARRY and all other lawyers in the same situation.The police must release him unconditionally.
