OLUMIDE AKPATA SPEAKS ON CORONAVIRUS, SAYS TAKE PRECAUTION, DON’T PANIC
Senior Partner at Templars, Olumide Akpata has spoken on the recent discovery of a coronavirus case in Lagos State. He has asked lawyers and Nigerians at large to take necessary precaution and not panic. He has also iterated that lawyers have a duty to investigate information and ensure to kick against false information merely designed to spread fear among the already distressed populace.
In a statement he made this morning to newsmen, he said “We woke up this morning to news of discovery of Nigeria’s patient zero for the dreaded Coronavirus. While it is likely that the popular response will be anxiety and hysteria, I urge all lawyers and Nigerians at large to not panic, rather to exercise precaution in going about their duties in providing services to their clients.
I also urge all lawyers as learned gentlemen to avoid and kick against the spread of false information about the virus that may be designed to ignite fear amongst the populace. Let us instead share reliable information to those around us, in our offices, in court premises, and put in place safeguards to ensure that our workplaces are safe spaces. All the while, let us maintain cordial relationships with one another and with our clients, especially those from countries with multiple identified cases.
I trust that the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and other tiers of government are working hard to contain the virus and prevent its further spread. Let us work hand in hand with them. As a nation, we have beat similar diseases in the past and I am confident this will be no different”
