OAU: Notice of Suspension of the Students Union Activities

Following security reports of the incessant fighting and unruly behavior during the congresses of the Student Union and the recalcitrant attitude of their leadership, it has become inevitable for the University Administration to suspend the activities of the Students Union of the Obafemi Awolowo University.

In the short period of its existence following the recent reinstatement, the Student Union had manifested the following unacceptable misdemeanours:

  • President’s supporters beating up the Speaker on June 29th and 30th 2017;
  • Speaker’ supporters beating up the president on September 15th 2017;
  • Fighting between the Vice-President and Director of Social in which head butts and stabbing with broken bottles were recorded at the meeting of the Union Executive on September 5th 2017;
  • Vandalisation of the vehicle of Ekiti State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists on July 14th, 2017;
  • Vandalisation of NURTW vehicle on October 6th, 2017;
  • Forceful release of students under investigation from police custody on October 6th, 2017;
  • Arrant dispensing of rumours of fees increase and fabricated threat of invasion by cultists in order to deceive and falsely gain acceptance amongst the students’ populace to precipitate crisis, capable of disrupting the academic activities of the university;
  • Conveyance of conflicting meeting by the executive and the legislature with resultant open confrontation and violence; and
  • Recent serious fighting and open fracas at the meeting of the union (in one of which the President of the Student Union was physically assaulted on November 1st, 2017) and which, if not promptly addressed, could lead to fatal consequences.

In the light of all the above, the administration, at its emergency meeting held on Monday, November 6th, 2017, has come to the inevitable conclusion that the activities of the Student Union be suspended until further notice.

In the meantime, the Student Union leadership is hereby requested to hand-over all properties of the Student Union to the Dean, Division of Students Affairs with immediate effect.
