Beloved reader / subscriber,
What a privilege to once again bring to your doorstep our unique take on the happenings that give life to the vibrant world of law around us!
It’s a privilege we take extremely seriously as we strive to outdo ourselves with every issue of this publication in our effort to showcase the events, trends and topical issues that engage the minds of legal practitioners – whether at the Bar or on the Bench – as well as other stakeholders in our quest to build a society anchored on the rule of law.
The final months of 2018 and the first quarter of year 2019 were a momentous period in the lives of Nigerians – most notably because this was the period of our quadrennial general elections, as Nigerians trooped out in their millions to choose their leaders and representatives (at both federal and constituency levels) for another four years. For better or for worse, members of the legal profession were not immune from the upheavals occasioned by a peculiarly Nigerian form of electioneering. The ripples of an election that will go down as one of the most contentious of our recent history are still with us.

But this did not stop members of the legal profession from doing what they do best – and that includes holding important events in various locations around the country. As usual, we at NEWSWIRE were there to chronicle these happenings, live and in full colour, and garnished with outstanding prose.
The Year 2018 with a flurry of activities, notable among them a conference organized in Port Harcourt, Rivers State by the NBA’s Section on Legal Practice (SLP) at which participants discussed the role of litigation in Nigeria’s electoral process – as if in anticipation of the high-stakes electoral drama that would dominate the first quarter of the year and beyond. It’s all here, on our pages.

As the old year wound to a close, the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Bar Association held an Oscar-worthy dinner at the Harbour Point event place to celebrate the end of the year, and to celebrate its equally-deserving performers.
Still on celebrations, the 1984 Law Class of the University of Ife (now the Obafemi Awolowo University) also held their 2018 annual reunion at the Lagos Continental Hotel on Victoria Island in December. It was a joyous occasion for participants as they came together, not just to celebrate, to share reminiscences and to network, but also to take stock and to re-strategize where necessary to ensure sustainable progress.
Two equally far-reaching gatherings took place in Lagos. One, a 2-day workshop on ways to minimize the negative impact of gas flaring and maximize its commercial potentials was held at the Parkview Astoria Hotel in Lagos, and organized by one of the country’s foremost law firms, George Etomi and Partners, in association with Syncrest Energy & Gas Limited, with support from the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources. It featured eye-opening presentations by knowledgeable and influential facilitators and resource persons drawn from various sectors of the energy industry across the globe. The other was a mentorship session for young lawyers organized by the NBA’s Lagos branch in association with the telecommunications giants, MTN. You cannot get better details of these two sessions anywhere but here.
On our cover story, we profile a woman of rare distinction and pedigree. Mrs. Ngozi Giwa-Amu, who holds the legal forte at the beverage giant, Seven-Up, is at her engaging best as she speaks with authority, candour and revealing insight on a wide range of issues – both general and personal. This is one interview you’ll savour over and over again.
Also in this edition, a Partner at the law firm of Odujinrin & Adefulu, as well as the Head of its Energy Practice & Real Estate and Mining Teams, an accomplished and erudite speaker as well as a prolific writer with numerous industry publications to his credit, Dr. Adeoye Adefulu is an active and dedicated member of the Nigerian Bar, he is also the Secretary of the NBA’s Section on Business Law. This year, he takes on the added responsibility of heading the Conference Planning Committee for the 2019 Annual Business Law Conference in Lagos. He recently sat down with the editor of Newswire Law & Events Magazine for a wide- ranging conversation on the upcoming SBL Conference, whose theme is ‘Growth, Investment and Employment: Beyond Rhetoric,’ and its expected impact on all relevant stakeholders.
