I No Longer Recognise the Country I Grew Up In – Nigeria’s First Female SAN

Chief (Mrs.) Folake Solanke, SAN is not known for mincing words, especially when it comes to matters of public interest. Over the years, she has built a reputation for candor, coupled with the passion that is the trademark of those concerned with the general good. These traits were very much in evidence at the recent triple celebrations of the eventful career of one Nigeria’s foremost lawyers, Deacon Dele Adesina, SAN at the Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre in Lagos on Thursday, February 22, 2018.

Speaking in her role as Chairman of the occasion, the legal amazon lamented the steady deterioration of values in Nigerian society – a situation which, she said, has taken on a hydra-headed character, not just in the corruption for which our country has become infamous, but also in the impunity that now pervades our (often adversarial) actions and interactions with one another, and the inhuman treatment of Nigerian immigrants in Libya.

According to NEWSWIRE’s correspondent in Lagos, Chief Solanke even used the physical look and feel of the Nigerian currency, the naira (which she described as ‘filthy and disease-ridden’) as well as the disappearance of lower denominations, to illustrate the rot in our society.

‘What is the Nigerian Bar Association doing or saying against these ills?’ she asked, adding that to combat this hydra-headed monster, the NBA must be more proactive – indeed more radical – than it is at present.

Adding his voice to Mrs. Solanke’s lamentations, another distinguished guest at the occasion, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, a former federal minister, described the legal profession as the ‘gold standard’ of the Nigerian society, and asked poetically:

‘If gold should rust, what will iron do?’
