UNBARRED:
After a week of intellectual engagement among the nation’s legal community, along with some of the worlds of business, the professions, politics and governance, the media and the academia, the 57th annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association drew to a close in a blaze of musical fireworks. Tagged ‘Un-BAR-red,’ the event, held in the main hall of the Landmark Centre on Victoria Island, Lagos, featured high-octane performance by some of Nigeria’s most popular artistes such as Brymo (the Afrobeat sensation whose sound evokes echoes of the great Fela Anikulapo-Kuti); female pop act Niniola; the rapper King Mufasa; rap king Falz the Bahd Guy (who also happens to be a lawyer in his own right); Olamide and rising star Bez.
Graced by the presence of top NBA officials including the president, A.B. Mahmud, SAN and his wife Justice Patricia Mahmud, as well as officials of the conference organizing committee, the event was nevertheless dominated by young lawyers who responded enthusiastically to the performances.
It was a fitting end to an absolutely fascinating conference experience. For lawyers who came from NBA branches outside Lagos, the UNBARRED concert was a memorable immersion into the dynamic cultural life of Nigeria’s cultural melting-pot, and a fitting farewell to ‘Eko 2017’ – as this year’s conference was tagged.
It will certainly whet the collective appetite for the 2018 NBA Conference.
