Nigerian-born Lawyer, Kelechi Madu Appointed as Justice Minister and Solicitor-General of Alberta, Canada

Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney, has appointed Nigerian-born Kaycee Madu as the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, the Provincial Secretary and Keeper of the Great Seal of the Province of Alberta.

In a LinkedIn Post, the new justice minister expressed his appreciation for his new appointment.

Madu promised to work on many critical democratic reforms and take the lead role on implementation of the province’s fight for a fair deal within confederation.

While speaking on his latest appointment, Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney said his appointment makes a strong indication especially in a time when Albertans have become more sensitive than ever to racial matters.

He also said; “He (Madu) is a man who has experienced racial prejudice firsthand and can bring that sensitivity to this important role,” Kenney said. “I’m excited to have him in that position.”

Madu said, “As a foreign-trained lawyer, I cherish the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which says, ‘Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination.’ I want to ensure that these words flourish in the lives of Albertans, and inspire confidence, not uncertainty,” he said.

“I look forward to working on many critical democratic reforms, including recall legislation and important citizenship initiative referendums, and taking the lead role on the implementation of our government’s fight for a fair deal within confederation.”

He thanked Kenney for putting confidence in him to lead “this important ministry.”

Madu was serving as the Minister of Municipal Affairs before his new appointment.

He is the first Black Canadian to occupy either provincial or federal justice positions of the justice minister, attorney general or solicitor general.

Madu had also made history when he became the first Nigerian-born member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta following elections in 2019. He was the sole candidate of the United Conservative Party to be elected into the assembly.

He graduated with a bachelor of laws from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. He migrated to Canada in 2005 with his wife who enrolled in postgraduate studies at the University of Alberta.
