An event that is destined to echo in the annals of the legal profession in Nigeria for a long time to come, took place recently in Benin, the Edo State capital.

It was the commissioning of an e-library  donated to the NBA’s Benin branch by the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL), Olumide Akpata.
NEWSWIRE Magazine’s correspondent, who monitored the event,  reports that the fully furnished e-library – complete with Internet access and 10 computers, as well as Law Pavilion e-Prime Software and  Solicitor’s Toolkit, backed up by Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) – was commissioned by the Hon. Justice (Mrs.)  Ikponwoba of the Edo State High Court in Benin.
In her speech at the occasion,  the eminent jurist remarked that the e-library, which is valued at N4m, was an eloquent testimony to Mr. Akpata’s commitment to continuing education for younger wigs in a bid to raise standards in the profession.
She commended the SBL helmsman for his gesture, adding that the facility would go a long way towards building capacity and honing practice skills among lawyers in the Benin Bar and beyond, and will be of great benefit not only to the Bar but also the Bench.
Also speaking. the donor, who is a commercial lawyer and a Partner at the law firm of Templars, reiterated his concern for the state of commercial law practice in Nigeria – and the Benin branch in particular – adding that his gesture was borne of his desire to help bring about a radical sea-change in its profile and fortunes in order to position it for both the challenges and opportunities of the fast changing legal and economic landscape.
Other respondents at the event were also full of gratitude to the SBL chairman and members of the section’s executive, and expressed confidence that the e-library would be a catalyst towards the emergence of the Benin Bar as a center of excellence and a reference-point as far as the analog-to-digital evolution of law practice was concerned.
