NBA, LAGOS BRANCH CONDEMNS THE ATTACK ON THE LIVES OF INNOCENT CITIZENS AT THE LEKKI TOLL GATE BY ARMED MEN IN UNIFORM.
On behalf of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), we thank the leadership of the NBA for the timely condemnation of the attack on the lives of the peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate , last night. The timely intervention of the NBA, as a critical stakeholder in Nation Building, enthronement of the Rule Law and voice to the voiceless, is commendable.
In line with the said condemnation, the Lagos Branch equally condemns the reported tragic and horrific scenes at the Lekki Toll Gate.
Whilst we recognise the right of Government to maintain law and order by imposing a curfew and seeking to curb the menace of hoodlums using the guise of a legitimate protest to engage in violence, it is nevertheless unacceptable to open fire on unarmed citizens that Government took an oath to defend. Should force be required at all there are other ways of dispersing the defiers of the curfew, there are many non lethal ways of enforcing security.
We therefore call on Government at all levels to desist from killing peaceful and unarmed protesters and to immediately fish out the perpetrators of these reported dastardly acts, in order for them to be brought to justice
In the meantime, we call on our members and all citizens to remain calm and law abiding, in order to forestall a state of anarchy.
